The Story So Far
Synopsis:
FBI Agents Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) and Astrid Farnsworth (Jasika Nicole) investigate all things weird, spooky and disgusting with the help of scientist Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble) and his son Peter (Joshua Jackson), under the command of one Agent Broyles (Lance Reddick). There is a larger conspiracy afoot. Essentially, it’s a hybrid of The X-Files and Lost.
Season 1:
Agent Olivia Dunham works for the FBI in Boston, Massachusetts. Things seem to be going well for her until her partner and lover is killed. This sends her on a quest for answers and leads her to Walter Bishop, a brilliant but broken scientist who knows a lot about “Fringe Science”. She has him released from a mental institution and he then agrees to assist the FBI’s Fringe Division, returning to his old laboratory at Harvard to carry out research and experiments, along with his reluctant son Peter and new recruit, Astrid. Much of the season is based around Walter’s development and the improvement of his relationship with Peter. But mostly, it’s about the pattern of scientific weirdness emerging in the world, and the possible involvement of megacorporation Massive Dynamic -- founded by Walter’s old lab partner, William Bell. Also, we learn Olivia was experimented on as a child. By Walter! Which means she can now jump between ours and an alternate universe!. Awesome.
Season 2:
Season 2 spends much time delving deeper into the alternate universe. William Bell (Leonard Nimoy -- how geeky is that?), trapped on the other side, explains the looming threat to our “Blue Universe” from the fragile “Red” one. Shape shifters are apparently all around the place, sent from the other universe to obtain information about us. Walter is certain that they are on the brink of a “storm”, a war with the other side: a war brought on by Walter’s well-meaning abduction of the Alternate Peter when he was a child. The other side has copies of all our favorites: Walter (nicknamed Walternate), Olivia (nicknamed Fauxlivia), Astrid, Broyles and the dead- in-our-universe Charlie Francis (Kirk Acevedo). Plus a few new faces too. At the end of the season, a rescue mission to save Peter -- recently made aware of his actual nature -- has Olivia confessing her love for him, but when our heroes come back to our side, we learn that we have the wrong Olivia. Fauxlivia is in our universe now, infiltrating it, and reporting back. Which leaves our poor Olivia captive and all alone in the other universe. Dun Dun DUN!
Season 3
(Episodes 1 - 9):Alternating universe stories take us almost up to the mid-season hiatus, but finally Olivia returns to our side. And then...
