| In Short: | How can you not like a cartoon about butt-kicking kindergartners amidst a show full of amusing references? |
| Recommended: | Hell, yes! |
| NARRATOR: | And with that, the girls were off... faster than you could say "Professor Utonium." |
| MAYOR: | Professor Uton... |
| GIRLS: | We're here, Mayor! |
| MAYOR: | Well, I'll be. I couldn't finish saying it |
Sugar. Spice. Everything Nice. And Chemical X. Even if you knew nothing about The Powerpuff Girls, that alone should convince you to watch. Who hasn't wanted to be able to mess with Chemical X? Awesome.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the show, it focuses on Professor Utonium who, using the abovementioned formula in an attempt to create the perfect little girl (we're going to ignore the question as to why he was attempting to do this), created instead three little girls with superpowers. Thus created, the girls then do battle with a variety of foes while attending kindergarten. Awesome.
The show started out on the What a Cartoon! Show (previously known as World Premiere Toons and subsequently called The Cartoon Cartoon Show) before people quickly realized the sheer awesomeness inherent within and The Powerpuff Girls had their own show that ran for a rather impressive six years. Awesome.
So what makes the show so awesome? How about the fact that the girls themselves are essentially nothing more than eyes, fists and feet. Nothing extraneous that could get in the way of the butt-kicking. A little odd, perhaps, to have them interact with things without actually having hands. But awesome? You bet.
Or how about the fun with words inherent in the writing? You have the city of Townsville, for instance, as opposed to the town of Citysville (which also comes into it on occasion). Or how the local 5-star restaurant is a french restaurant called "Le Dunne King Donnet" (i.e. Dunkin' Donuts)? And, if I may be so bold as to reference The Powerpuff Girls movie in the midst of a TV review, in a short span you encounter more simian-based puns and plays-on-words than you'd ever think possible. Awesome.
But it's not just the writing, but also the references and allusions to... well... all sorts of things. We have to references to the Beatles... or anime... japanese monster movies... or James Bond... or, well, I could go on and on, but that wouldn't be in the style of the show. Trust me... lots o' amusing references. Awesome.
Bottom line, this is perhaps the epitome of Cartoon Network-type cartoons, with fast action and great writing... a cartoon that one the surface appears to be a kids’ show, but quickly reveals itself to have quite the wicked sense of humor with lots of allusions, both pop-culture and not, that only the not-kids-crowd would get.
Awesome.
