Oh, yeah. Dead and Doing It happened, along with our review of a little book called Memories of the Future, Vol. 1.
Let’s get the hate out of the way first. We won’t print all of the vitriolic -- and possibly libelous -- letters we received regarding our review of Wil Wheaton’s first season Star Trek: The Next Generation episode guide/memoir, and instead content ourselves with a representative sample, from one Ned Flanders (really, Ned? Really?)
You say "Wheaton is different. He’s not just an actor. He has proper geek cred." No, he's not different. He's Wesley Crusher just with more curse words. He's a weenie. When will these twitter morons learn?”
Rachel responds (to Ned, and his likeminded brethren):
Um. What? TNG ended closing on two decades ago! And the writers of the show already punished Wesley’s character for whatever transgression you think he may have committed closing on two decades ago! So, dude! Deal. Put it behind you. You don’t like Wil Wheaton? Don’t Follow him on Twitter. Trust me, he’s not gonna miss you.
Moving on. Let’s talk the love.
Caridad Pineiro’s comment was short and sweet.
Thanks for the great rundown on vampire books!
You’re welcome, Caridad. (And, hey, cool name!)
Mariana Harliss’s was longer.
Love Dead and Doing It, what a great idea for an article and what a great job you did!!! I've been reading vampire romances for years, never realised how often it takes 3 days for the vamps to turn. You covered a lot of series I haven't read, but definitely will now, especially the Jane Jameson series, after reading the author's article as well as what you said about it. I also really liked the roundup of the Argeneau Vampires, Casa Dracula and MJ Davidson's books. And the BDB "Analysis" was LMAO funny even with me having a major thing for Tohr. Thank you for this wonderful guide to vampire romance! And I will be checking out the Vampires in America series, too. Thanks again.
You, too, are very welcome indeed, Mariana.
It’s true that Teresa Wright wasn’t entirely enamoured of us:
Very good article and a great way to explore the series, but you left out the very BEST--Kerrelyn Sparks’ Love At Stake series is the best ever.
Rachel responds:
Well, yes, but we couldn’t cover every vampire romance series EVER in the one article, or you'd still be reading it -- and at least we did cover the fact that we didn’t cover her, so... forgive us?
Luckily, our new best friend Lacey (who is the possessor of possibly the best e-mail address ever) loves us unconditionally:
I would just like to say that I have been following your articles for the last couple issues and love it! Somehow just about everything you guys write about pertains to my interests and I am excited to read all the articles. I really enjoyed this latest article "Dead and Doing it" and the way it analyzed the vampire series. Thank you for giving me something good and interesting to read!
Any time, Lacey! Y’all come on back now, y’hear?
Shandra Robinson also likes our magazine, but was less than impressed with a certain Hollywood Geek going by the name of David Rosiak and what he had to say about Stephenie Meyer:
I have enjoyed reading your articles for the most part, and I compliment you on providing a lot of meaty content to dig into. I was, however, deeply offend (sic) by David Rosiak's slights on Stephanie Meyers' religion, and women who have chosen motherhood and family as their priority and profession (sic) by describing them as "bored" "undereducated" and not experienced with "real" relationships, as a part of his critique of the Twilight series. These comments were both unnecessary and uninformed. By all means, tell me what you think of the plot, characters, and prose. But to cast personal aspersions upon the author and her readers personal lives shows not only a lack of class, but his own paucity of cogent reasoning skills. For the record I have read Ms. Meyers' books and I too found them poorly organized, lacking in sympathetic characters, and rather banal. (Incidently, if this critique of Mr. Rosiak's writing is too abstruse for him I, an undereducated (read Ph.D.), Mormon housewife, with a very real and fulfilling relationship would be happy to explain it in simpler terms.)
Geek Speak’s Editor in Chief responds: Oooh, burn! I hear ya, sister. But mine is not to reason why… opinion pieces are just that, and while I disagree vehemently with David’s point of view, I would never curtail his rights to a) have it and b) share it.
In other mail, on a slightly creepy note, in addition to the usual offers for very special direct marketing services and various cut-price meds (we’re still fine, thanks), we also may have gotten propositioned. Or solicited. At least, that’s if “prostitutki” means what we think it means. (And we’re pretty sure it does.)
Ew. We feel dirty.
But your lovely letters make us clean again! We thank you, as ever, for taking the time to contact us (yes, even you, Wesley-bashers). We can’t print every comment, but we read them all and we love them, we honestly love them. (Hey, did you see Olivia Newton John in the finale of Glee?)
See you next month!
