Ah, ‘twas a busy month in the Geek Speak
Mailroom, just the way we like it.
We kick things off in the Liaden Universe®, with
these words from contributor Nina Mangan…
Loved the
Love Letters to Liad! Especially since you
used mine! WOot! Thanks for egging on more
addicts! May you Ride the Luck - and the first
question of Final 5 is too vague - Wars 3-6 over
Trek, but Trek over 1-3.
Well, Nina, that’s what the Comment box is for,
as you have discovered!
Reader Jesse Diller also had something to say
re: Liad, this time regarding our K. Burtt’s
desperate desire to have someone punch the
vicious and abusive Ran Eld in the face, and his
discussion of same with Sharon Lee and Steve
Miller in our interview with the pair,
Val Con Came First…
K. Burtt responds: Taken from
Chapter 13 of Fledgling: "[SNIP...]people defend
their honor and those who fall within it by any
means, including physical force.' So... HA! Daav
*could* have punched Ran Eld!"
Except that doing so would have been 'out of
code', and thus a blow not just to Ran Eld, but
also to his own honor.
Thanks for clearing that up, Jesse!
Moving on, the enigmatically-named Brian B had
this to say…
I'm an aspiring screenwriter, and I
found the Hollywood Geek piece to be really
inspiring. Not that I now think I'll be able to
kick start a career by hanging around film geek
forums, but the idea that the best way to get
your start is by playing in your own wheelhouse
has made me rethink everything I've been working
on. Sure, people always say "write what you
know," but Rosiak's article really brings that
home. No more attempts at college kid comedies
for me. Now it's dark magic and blood sacrifice
all the way. Thanks. I look forward to the next
article from the hollywood geek. Brian
Well, we hope you like True Blood and
hate Twilight, Brian, otherwise you
won’t enjoy David’s column quite so much this
month.
Luke Price had this to say, on our
Top 13 Geek Goddesses…
I can't believe you left off Margaret Weiss!
Co-creator of 'The Dragonlance Chronicles'.
Shame on you :P
Kate responds: “Shame on us, indeed. I had
actually never heard of this person, or of the
Dragonlance Whatevers. However, a quick visit to
Wikipedia does reveal that our friend Luke has
misspelled Margaret Weis' name.”
Rachel responds: "Shame on us? Shame on her,
sir, for making me read all seven books in the
Death Gate Cycle, breathless as to learn the
final outcome, only to have. . . NOTHING HAPPEN!
Worst book series ending of all time, and I’m
afraid my animus toward Ms. Weis (and her
co-conspirator, Tracy Hickman) is undiminished,
even all these years later. But, yeah, Dragonlance is cool."
The Geek Speak Mailbox regularly receives
important news of various advertising services
(we’re fine, thanks), and solicitous enquiries
after our health (while we’re grateful for your
concern, we don’t really need diazepam,
discounted or not). But every now and then we
receive a press release that is too good not to
share.
First of all, this, from Matt Protos at

And then this, another random, yet somehow so
right, heads up from graphic artist Katharine
Miller...
Robot
of Leisure Offers a Glimpse of What Happens
When a Robot Becomes Obsolete
For Immediate Release
Toronto, ON--Forget everything you know about
robots. Meet Boris, the resident robot of
leisure assigned to the Zükünfthaus model home.
One event is about to change his life and
challenge everything he's been programmed to
believe.
In Boris and the Open House, it is the first
open house for Zükünfthaus and Boris gets the
opportunity to show off his skills for hordes of
potential homebuyers. As Boris prepares for the
festivities, he is frequently distracted by his
own enjoyment of his tasks. When the day doesn't
go as planned, Boris copes with dashed
expectations and uncertainty for the future.
The six-part Robot of Leisure graphic novel
series follows Boris as he adjusts to his
newfound freedom. Now this relic of an
unrealized future must confront and conquer
solitude, obsolescence and his own identity.
With no one to serve, Boris pursues his own life
of leisure, but will he be content with mere
frivolity?
Boris and the Open House, the first installment
of the series is available as a free preview at
the Robot of Leisure website. The second
installment, Boris Makes a Friend is scheduled
for release in late Fall 2010. Along with the
book preview, the website contains history about
the character of Boris, past artwork and videos
about the series.

Geek Speak responds:
Robot
of Leisure cool! Check it out!
But our favorite letter this month? Well, that’s
easy. It comes from Genevieve Jenkins, and is
our first official proposal of marriage…
“Howard the Duck, baby! Rachel Hyland, will you
marry me? No one else gets me like you do.”
Rachel responds: Yes! You book the church, I’ll
do the Gift Registry.
Forbidden
Planet okay with you?
Thank
you to everyone who sent in their comments! We
can’t print to them all, but we love and
appreciate each one...
We still don't need diazepam, though.
Until next month...
